The "Holiday Slide" Starts Now – Here’s How to Stop It

It happens every single year.

August ends, your back-to-school routines finally start to feel somewhat normal, and then... September hits. A missed alarm here. An unexpected half-day at school there. A work deadline that leaks into dinner time.

Before you know it, October arrives, November flies by in a blur, and you’re standing in the middle of December feeling completely burnt out, wondering when you lost control of your schedule.

We call this the Holiday Slide, and it actually starts right now.

How September Disruptions Snowball into December Chaos

The final quarter of the year is notorious for demanding a lot of you – both at work and at home. Between Q4 business goals, holiday planning, family gatherings, and seasonal illnesses, it’s only natural that your bandwidth gets stretched thin.

But it doesn’t have to lead to utter burnout. The mistake most of us make is waiting until November to start managing the stress.

What do we mean?

When small disruptions in September aren’t addressed, they build micro-stress. You start trading your personal downtime, focus hours, or self-care because you have to keep up.

But if you do this, by the time the actual holiday rush arrives, your energy baseline may already be at zero.

The Solution? Pre-Holiday Stabilization

The secret to a peaceful end of the year isn't working harder in December. That way lies madness. What you need to do is start stabilizing in September.

How?

Pre-holiday stabilization simply means building small, non-negotiable routines right now that protect your sanity when life gets hectic.

Here’s how to start:

Audit Your “Micro-Stressors.” Ask yourself: What’s causing me friction this week? Is it trying to work with kids playing in the background? Scrambling for quiet time to prep for meetings? It’s all about identifying where you’re losing energy.

Carve Out Dedicated Focus Blocks. Stop trying to multitask high-priority work alongside parenting. Even two hours of uninterrupted work or quiet time can save you five hours of distracted effort. Seriously. It may not look like it, but “multitasking” is a four-letter word. Avoid it whenever possible.

Protect Your “Off” Switch. Give yourself permission to take a genuine break, whether that’s enjoying a hot coffee in silence, reading a chapter of a book, or hitting a weekend work window so your weeknights stay free.

Give Yourself (and Your Wallet) a Break

Taking care of yourself and hitting your work deadlines shouldn't feel like an uphill battle. If you need a calm space to catch up on work, reset your mind, or just breathe while your kiddos enjoy engaging, screen-free fun – we're here for you.
